The Butts

The poem I chose to talk about is "The Butts" by Seamus Heaney. What I like about the poem most is the imagery, the way the man is described, by the boy, just by
looking at the wardrobe full of suits. The suits are like the man's removable skins, protective shell that are hung in the wardrobe. " Broad and short... a bit standoffish."
I also like the paradox that is in the poem. When the boy is in the wardrobe stealing the cigarette butts out of the suits 'pressed against' his face, its like the boy is getting
a hug from the man, he's receiving love and affection while doing something he shouldn't be.

The reason I like Seamus Heaney as a poet is because he writes about relatable, everyday events. Even though poems about fairies and mystical creatures still make exciting
topics to write about, Heaney can take an ordinary thing you might see or go through in your life, like seeing a tragic story in the newspaper or dealing with a loved one passing away, and give a completely different perspective on it.
