Digging

Digging

I like this poem because it is very descriptive, telling the reader about “the

squelch and slap” of the potatoes being put in the ground.  It is also the type of

poem that you would read over and over again, as it is calm and relaxing.

The characters in this poem are the writer, the dad and the Grand-dad.

The poem is about the speaker, talking about watching his dad, planting

potatoes, “To scatter new potatoes that we picked”.

I like the structure in this poem to, it uses Iambic Pentameter in certain lines

which really gives the poem a slow and dreary feel to it “Under my window, a

clean rasping sound” is an example of this.

The imagery in this poem is intriguing; it shows a man outside in the cold and

damp grass, using a spade to shovel dirt, and plant potatoes, while the speaker

is staring out the window holding his pen, wishing it was a shovel.

One of the themes in this poem is Nostalgia, “Once I carried him milk in a

bottle” is an example of this.  The speaker is looking back on his life while

sitting watching his dad digging.
